Meet Volunteer of the Year: Mary Jane Proschel
Maplewood Volunteer of the Year

We are thrilled to share that on May 7th, volunteer, Mary Jane Proschel, received the NYSHFA | NYSCAL 2025 Senior Adult Volunteer of the Year Award in recognition of her volunteer service at Maplewood Nursing Home in Rochester, NY.

Mary Jane has been volunteering at The Maplewood for over 20 years! She started coming to The Maplewood to visit her mother who lived here, and elected to continue her affiliation with us as a volunteer. She started her monthly cooking program, which emphasizes healthy choices and utilizes local produce whenever possible. Mary Jane easily gets to know her “crowd,” enjoying chatting and answering questions. She is very interested in residents opinions and has been known to follow through with suggestions and implement them in the kitchen! She will pick and adjust recipes to accommodate those with food allergies and other issues. Mary Jane always makes more than enough food for everyone, including staff! She also comes in on Saturdays to help out, lending a hand with games and other events. Her presence enhances The Maplewood community and the quality of life of our residents.

“Mary Jane’s commitment and dedication to our residents is greatly appreciated,” said Gregory Chambery, Administrator. “Her volunteerism is truly exemplary and deserving of this prestigious award.”

NYSHFA’s Volunteer of the Year Awards Program recognizes outstanding volunteers serving in skilled nursing facilities.
