Maplewood volunteer, Sandy Hogan, has received the 2026 Senior Adult Volunteer of the Year Award from the New York State Health Facilities Association | New York State Center for Assisted Living (NYSHFA | NYSCAL). She received the award for her volunteer service at Maplewood Nursing & Rehabilitation in Webster, NY. The award was presented on June 3rd at the 2026 NYSHFA | NYSCAL Awards Luncheon during the Association’s annual conference in Albany, NY.

Sandy first became part of The Maplewood family when her mother was a resident. From the beginning, she formed meaningful relationships with residents, family members, and staff. When her mother passed away, she chose to continue her connection to Maplewood by becoming a volunteer, a role she has embraced with dedication and compassion.

Twice a week, Sandy spends quality time with residents, offering companionship, conversation, and friendship. Her unique perspective as a former family member allows her to connect in a deeply personal and genuine way. Whether leading the women’s group, introducing residents to one another, or simply sitting and talking, Sandy has a gift for making people feel valued, included, and cared for. Residents love her and eagerly look forward to her visits, while families appreciate the joy she brings to their loved ones. Sandy’s warmth, humor, and lighthearted spirit make residents feel less like they are speaking to a volunteer and more like they are spending time with a trusted friend. She has a natural ability to brighten someone’s day and make every person she encounters feel special.

In addition to the countless hours she spends with residents, Sandy also plays an important role in Maplewood’s community events and celebrations. Her creativity and enthusiasm inspire memorable programs and activities. From designing decorations and creating props to helping residents participate in events, Sandy consistently goes above and beyond to make life at Maplewood enjoyable and engaging.

“Sandy’s kindness, commitment, and dedication to our residents are deeply appreciated. I always look forward to watching her interact and seeing the genuine happiness she brings to each of our residents,” said Gregory Chambery, long-time owner of Maplewood Nursing & Rehabilitation. “Sandy generously shares her time, talents, and heart with our community. We are incredibly fortunate to have her as a part of the Maplewood family, and she is truly deserving of this recognition from NYSHFA | NYSCAL.”

NYSHFA’s Volunteer of the Year Awards Program recognizes outstanding volunteers serving in skilled nursing facilities. Winners received an engraved obelisk and were invited to attend the NYSHFA | NYSCAL annual conference.
