Fitness Apps and their Role in Health and Wellness

More and more people now have smartphones with the capability to access the Internet and all it has to offer. Fitness apps are a great asset for smartphone-equipped people who are trying to get healthy. Apps like "MyFitnessPal" (iPhone | Android Phone) and "Lose It!" (iPhone | Android Phone) can be great for people needing a little guidance in either losing weight or making healthy choices. They can help track the calories you take in and calculate how many calories you are burning depending on your daily level of activity. The apps let you enter your age, gender, height, weight, and your chosen goal of losing, maintaining, or gaining weight. These tools help you make realistic goals for each week, and tell you the amount of calories you need to consume in order to achieve your goals.

Caregiving with a Difference: Modified Yoga and Chair Chi

Modified yoga and chair chi are two exercises that we've added to our Wellness program at The Maplewood. These relaxing activities promote mind/body fitness, and are fun to do with a loved one.

We invite you to watch our video to learn more about the benefits of modified yoga and chair chi. Afterward, you may decide to seek out a class at a local exercise center to participate. If so, always be sure to work with a trained instructor at a reputable facility.

Movement of Energy… Adapting T’ai Chi at The Maplewood

This past February I had the exiting opportunity to attend a seated T’ai Chi seminar in Robbinsville, NJ. The seminar was held by the founder of “Chair Chi”, Pat Griffith from San Marcos, California. After participating in the seminar I am now a certified Chair Chi instructor! Chair Chi was developed for those not able to practice the traditional T’ai Chi. By modifying the practice of T’ai Chi at chair level, the elderly and disabled can reap the benefits of the exercises.

Traditional T’ai Chi was first developed in China as a martial art. Different variations have been introduced but the main premise has always been to bring a mental calm and clarity to the mind and body.

Caregiving with a Difference: An Overview and Demonstration of Adaptive Clothing

As our loved ones age and their mobility decreases, what seems like a simple task of getting dressed every day can actually seem like a chore. Adaptive clothing and footwear can be a true gift to ease this struggle.

With this in mind, we've created some informational material that we hope you'll find helpful in understanding the role of adaptive clothing in maintaining quality of life for your loved one.

Exciting Changes in Our Therapy & Wellness Department

There has been a lot going on in the therapy world of The Maplewood lately. We have said goodbye to a few familiar faces and have welcomed some new faces. Cindy Taber has accepted the position of Therapy & Wellness Department Assistant. Liz Benedict has taken on the position of Physical Therapist for our rehab residents and our long-term care residents as needed.

Over the last six months I have been working on and have received my Certified Personal Trainer’s license through the National Association of Sports Medicine. Through this course I have accumulated a wealth of knowledge and am hoping to add a little spice to the workout routine that the residents already have in place. I have also taken over as the Wellness Coordinator and hold bi-weekly wellness classes. With all of this I have been given the new title of Therapy & Wellness Department Manager/Certified Personal Trainer. I am excited to take on this new responsibility and look forward to providing the best quality of service to our residents.
